Here Comes the Story of the Hurricane, Says Filmmaker Paola Mendoza

Next week marks the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrinas hit on the Gulf Coast. Since and then, filmmakers have responded to the disaster in full force, roiled out a surprising bit of passionate, original films about the storm and its aftermath. (We featured one of them earlier this year.) Indiepix is releasing a four-DVD place of Katrina-themed films, including four features and quartet shorts. One of the best of these is Paola Mendozas Still Standing, a documentary account of the filmmakers visit to her Colombian grandmother as she deals with the wreckage of her Mississippi home. The highlight here is not so often the devastation on display (which is substantial) simply the touch, easygoing interaction between Mendoza and her grandmother as they ransacking through the debris, spill the beans about an uncertain succeeding, and discuss what makes a place a home a place where I canful fart, as grandma puts it. Its a lovely little film, and it makes us tidal bore to see what Mendoza does succeeding. Lucky for us, she is currently at ferment on her first tale feature.

Cancer Signatures Uncovered

A modern systematic analysis of the relationship between the neoplastic and developmental transcriptome provides an outline of trends in cancer gene saying. The research, published lately in BioMed Central's receptive access journal Genome Biology, describes how cancers prat be divided into trine groups distinguished by disparate developmental signatures.

Isaac S Kohane from Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard University, US, led a team of researchers wHO performed a comprehensive compare of genes expressed in early developmental stages of various human tissues and those expressed in different cancers touching these tissues. He says, "Our study reveals potentially clinically relevant differences in the cistron expression of different cancer types and represents a reference framework for rendition of smaller-scale functional studies".

One of the three described groups of cancers has an other developmental phenotype and expresses genes that are characteristic of stem cells. From a developmental perspective, this group presents very homogeneously. A second gear, more heterogenous group tends to be more similar to late development and is characterized by an inflammatory signature tune. The tierce is a small group of cancers that confront as a transition phenotype between these two extremes and displays both characteristics.

According to Kohane, "This segregation of tumors into leash groups with distinct look patterns is surprising. Clearly, the developmental trajectory provides a meaningful background for capturing large-scale differences in gene manifestation across diverse conditions".

The study's results will lead towards a better understanding of human disease from a 'macrobiological' attack to analyzing high-throughput data. According to the authors, "Shifting our focus from single sets of genes or processes to the biology of aggregates on the order of the entire transcriptome is probable to be useful in establishing highly robust molecular correlations between seemingly unrelated disease phenotypes".

Coldplay still hot on U.K. chart

Album, single holding down No. 1 spots

LONDON -- Coldplay's international chart domination was extended Sunday as it scored a double triumph on the new U.K. sales charts. As "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (Parlophone/EMI) started a second week as Britain's No. 1 album, "Viva La Vida" debuted atop the singles survey to become the band's first U.K. No. 1 hit.
The album stayed ahead of Duffy's "Rockferry" (A&M/Universal), which moved back from No. 3 to No. 2 in its 16th chart week, changing places with Neil Diamond's "Home Before Dark" (Columbia). Northern dance label All Around the World won another notable chart victory as hardcore DJ-producer Darren Styles' "Skydivin'" entered at No. 4.
U.K. rock trio Feeder debuted at No. 8 with its sixth studio album, "Silent Cry" (Echo), and Sara Bareilles' "Little Voice" (Columbia/Sony BMG) made its U.K. debut at No. 9, as the single "Love Song" moved up again from No. 5 to No. 4.
There was a No. 11 start for critically lauded Seattle band Fleet Foxes' self-titled debut on Bella Union and a remarkable No. 16 start for late Beach Boy Dennis Wilson's revived 1977 solo set "Pacific Ocean Blue" (Epic/Sony BMG). Veteran English entertainer Petula Clark's "Then & Now -- The Very Best Of" (UMTV/Universal) came in at No. 17 and "Strength in Numbers" (Polydor), the third album by Leeds rock band The Music, at No. 19.
Coldplay's No. 1 start on the singles chart follows the recent No. 8 peak for first single "Violet Hill," and is the band's eighth U.K. top 10 hit. It outdoes their previous highest-ranking releases "In My Place" and "Speed of Sound," which peaked at No. 2 in 2002 and 2005, respectively. "Violet Hill" rose 12-11 on the new chart as another track from the "Vida" album, "Lost!", climbed 62-55 on download sales.
The new singles chart also saw Ne-Yo's "Closer" (Def Jam/Universal) climbing 3-2 and Chris Brown's "Forever" (Jive/Sony BMG) 8-5. Brown has two concurrent top 10 titles, as Jordin Sparks' "No Air" (RCA/Sony BMG), on which he features, jumped 22-10. There was a No. 14 entry for "We Made It" (Interscope/Universal) by Busta Rhymes featuring Linkin Park, as the Jonas Brothers' first European single "SOS" (Hollywood/EMI) came in at No. 16.
Duffy continues her reign on Billboard's pan-European sales charts, with "Rockferry" in a third consecutive and sixth aggregate week atop European Top 100 Albums. "Mercy" leads Eurochart Hot 100 Singles for a second straight week, and third overall.

No charges for Britney Spears

Britney Spears is no longer in trouble for running over anybody's foot. Prosecutors have announced that they will not be pursuing charges brought by a paparazzo who was injured last year in a scuffle with Spears's car.

At the time of the incident, Spears's vehicle was surrounded with photographers, and in all the furore, one of these fellows had his foot squashed. A report by Los Angeles County prosecutors described "a lot of noise and confusion" at the scene, with Spears "driving at an extremely slow rate of speed and in a straight path".

After examining police records and a video of the incident, deputy district attorney Joseph D Shidler said that the "only way the victim's foot could have been where the video indicates it to be was by the victim placing it in that location".

The photographer filed a criminal complaint against Spears in early May, almost six months after the injury was sustained. The victim was not named in the prosecutors' report.

While the injured paparazzo may have been fishing for publicity, a court settlement or just a quality photo, we like to imagine he had something more modest in mind - a tyre-crushed foot is, after all, a semi-permanent kind of autograph.
